Many older buildings were insulated with outdated standards. These buildings may require additional insulation in order to heat and cool more efficiently. They may also need air infiltration corrections and/or added ventilation to allow summer heat and winter moisture accumulation to escape. Buildings need to be in a thermal balance. Excessive air infiltration renders many insulation products ineffective no matter how well they are installed. Improperly installed insulation and/or inadequate ventilation can cause serious problems.
